Description

As the globe is experiencing an increasing number of crises, the work of scientists – inter alia at iDiv – d becomes increasingly challenging. We want to understand the world: how species behave, how ecosystems work, and how we humans affect all this. We want our work to be valued and want to be approached for our knowleddge, yet we also have the urge to help address some key elements of the polycrisis. This often requires proactively approaching decision-makers or other societal actors, or jointly calling for action. It also requires addressing mis/disinformation.
How can we maintain our role as scientists in delivering balanced knowledge, to serve as honest brokers? How do we address mis/disinformation, and how can we best work together to maximise our impact? Here I bring experiences from several projects (iCAP-BES, CAP4GI, Agroecology-TRANSECT, VielFalterGarten and UNP+), some focusing on European policies (especially the Common Agricultural Policy and the Nature Restoration Regulation) while others focus on people and municipalities, especially through citizen science (butterflies!). I propose that we need to work not only with facts and evidence, but also with emotions and narratives. Therefore, we have much to gain from interdisciplinarity. I conclude with some thoughts of the path we (may) take into an uncertain future, and how to work with scenarios.
