Description
Crises such as wars, inflation, pandemics, climate change and migration leave only minor and peripheral attention to biodiversity loss, despite its existential threat to humanity and all other living beings. PrioDiv, a new iDiv Flexpool project, aims to examine to what extent biodiversity is prioritised in decision-making processes during times of multiple crises in fine terms and how this could be improved through low-cost measures. The project approaches this objective from two angles: (i) we conduct a controlled behavioural experiment designed to better understand the demand for biodiversity-related information in the context of overlapping crises; (ii) we analyse newspaper coverage to examine how biodiversity is prioritised in media reporting. This involves a text analysis of leading newspaper outlets published between 2015 and 2025 in several countries of both the Global North and Global South, taking into account their political orientation, known as a strong predictor for biodiversity prioritisation. To foster the communication of insights from our text analysis, we also want to implement an open-access online tool that visualises on demand the dynamics of biodiversity coverage in the context of multiple crises — depending on the location, political orientation, and time frame of the analysed media. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together PrioDiv's multidisciplinary investigators and collaborators to exchange ideas and refine key concepts. We aim to advance the project design by taking into account the current state of the art — both in the broader scientific community and, more specifically, within the iDiv network. This particular workshop is intended to remain internal, as we are still in the study design phase, where in-depth discussions with the involved co-investigators and collaborators is crucial. The workshop will ensure PrioDiv collaborators will be present at the conference that offers valuable opportunities for engaging with the broader iDiv research community.
