Description
Metabarcoding is a versatile, powerful and widely used tool for the identification of taxonomic entities, uncovering hidden diversity, assessment of community composition in space and time, elucidating species interactions and food webs, and biodiversity changes. Last year, the Support Unit iBarc was established which provides direct access to metabarcoding services, starting from project planning via molecular lab support and services to downstream bioinformatics analysis, thereby covering a broad range of taxonomic groups from bacteria and fungi to insects and mammals. While these services are being offered as part of iBarc’s Support & Service Center, we also aim to foster communication and methodological and scientific exchange among the iDiv research groups using metabarcoding.
In the framework of the iDiv conference, we propose a 1.5-hours workshop to attract scientists outside our existing iBarc network to make metabarcoding an integral part of their research portfolio. The workshop will consist of two sessions: (1) Brief introduction to iBarc’s services and short presentations by members of the iBarc network, demonstrating how metabarcoding is currently being used in biodiversity research in the iDiv family; (2) Discussion on methodological advances such as the integration of different sequencing technologies, and new collaborative initiatives in breakout groups, followed by a summary of the breakout session results. Beyond the time span of the actual workshop, we will offer the opportunity of guided tours to the labs of Robert Paxton (insect metabarcoding) or the UFZ Halle (bacteria and fungi metabarcoding and sequencing facilities).
We cordially invite everybody interested in metabarcoding to learn more about our mission and services during this workshop!
