Description

Human-induced climate change threatens global biodiversity, with the impact of extreme weather events (EWEs) on species still unclear. We introduce a framework to assess the effects of EWEs on species. As a case study, we use occupancy models for 132 German bird species of conservation concern, using monthly weather and remote sensing data from 2000 to 2022. The models predict species occupancy across Germany from 1999 to 2022, allowing us to compare suitability during non-extreme months with that during extreme weather events. This approach identifies vulnerable species, communities, and regions to specific EWEs. With this approach it is possible to identify geographic areas, species communities, taxonomic- and functional groups that may be vulnerable towards specific EWE.
