Description:
Economic experiments are at the forefront of these recent methodological developments. By economic experiments, we include discrete choice experiments (DCEs), laboratory experiments, field experiments, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Their main common feature is that they rely on data generated in a controlled setting, where participants have been randomly assigned to treatment and control groups. In contrast to “naturally occurring” observational data, experimental data is obtained through a rigorous experimental protocol. This allows for clearer identification of effects and causality and for results that are potentially replicable in other contexts or with other types of participants. The newly emerging field of living labs transfers these experimental approaches to the 'real' world. They serve to transfer the insights gained from these experiments into reality. They are characterized by a high degree of external validity and internal complexity. They are a particularly innovative method that focuses primarily on structural and process-related processes, which are of highest potential, when looking at transformation challenges of Agirculture, Foresty, and Food Systems. However, yet, they lack a clear definition, a strong scientitfic back-up and standards, which make those appraoches widely applicable.
The aim of the workshop is to bring together expert knowledge on experimental knowledge and living labs in Germany, Europe and worldwide in order to expand the network of experimental approaches, both in the laboratory, in semi-laboratories and in real situations, and to differentiate them from one another and to provide a common understanding.
To this end, various outstanding keynote speakers (Vic Adamowicz (University of Alberta, CA), Yann Raineau (INARE, FR) and Elina Fisk (JAMK, F) were recruited as Impulse Speakers to bring together the current state of Living Labs in the fields of agricultural and applied sciences and offer a platform to discuss and develop standards and pathways to enrich experimental rigor and application.
