Description
The aim of the present study is to contribute to the understanding of the diversity of the Cuban bryophyte flora within a historical and geographical context, based on a revision of herbarium specimens primarily held at the herbaria Haussknecht (JE) in Jena, Germany and EGR from the Department of Botany and Ecology in Eszterházy University in Eger, Hungary, as well as duplicates and original specimens from the former herbarium of the Instituto de Botánica, Academia de Ciencias de Cuba (HAC), currently belonging to the herbarium BSC of the Centro Oriental de Ecosistemas y Biodiversidad (BIOECO) in Santiago de Cuba. The specimens were collected mainly during the late 20th century in Western, Central, and Eastern Cuba by both Cuban and foreign botanists. The study of the specimens involved their taxonomic identification using conventional sample preparation techniques for microscopic observation, consultation of specialized literature, and, in some cases, comparison with type specimens or specimens previously identified by specialists. To date, approximately 1.120 herbarium samples have been revised, the majority of which contain more than one specimen belonging to a different species. 50 taxa represent new findings for this Caribbean nation. Of these, 10 are new records of mosses, 32 are new records of liverworts, and 8 are new species of leafy liverworts belonging to the family Lejeuneaceae. Some of these new findings have already been published, while the rest will be published shortly. These results, derived from the revision of these herbarium collections, highlight the high bryological diversity in Cuba.
